What is SpinNation.Tv?

SpinNation’s mission is to provide an online learning environment from contributors all over the world. Here we focus on exploring and expanding the creative side of turntablism, CD mixing, digital DJing and production.

Officially launched in February 2012, SpinNation offers a wonderful platform that enables users to add DJ/Production tutorials via Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and Yahoo. In addition we also have a blog where exclusive contributors can post educational DJ/Production content and a wonderful online store powered by Zazzle.ca

In the Beginning

In 2004 Ryan C along side two family members started to teach DJ classes in the back of driving school to further expand DJ education. Due to location issues Ryan started moving the school from various venues across Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Finally in 2010 Ryan blueprinted a new idea to bring DJ lessons to the internet and called it SpinNation.

Charity Work

SpinNation has sponsored a lovely little girl by the name of Harini through World Vision. Proceeds from our company go to help give Harini a wonderful home, clean drinking water and proper education.

Top 5 Tips when creating a DJ EPK

IF you want to secure more DJ gigs, you probably will want to have a DJ EPK, but what is it? It is the kit that will hold all of your press related material and there are a few things that are a must have in any EPK. It is a process that may take you some time to be able to get together all of what you need and will require the help of friends to make it, but that’s what friends are for. You will want a bio, photos, videos and mare, but how to you sell it to be able to market yourself for your performances and give yourself a brand.  You will be able to market yourself with five steps to bring your EPK up to a higher standard and brand yourself.

First Things First: A Good Bio

The most important part of any DJ’s EPK is the bio and that is where you need to start. It is what will give you personality and a name, but there are some things that you want and some things that you do not want to include. You want your BIO to include about you, but you can leave out from a baby, as it should be about you as a professional DJ and not about your childhood. You may as well want to leave out any hype and keep it to the point and about who you are as a DJ and where you get your influences as well as the music that you play.

The Second Big Step: Getting the Photos and Videos of Your Performances

The second big step will be getting documentation of your performances in the form of photos and video. You want to be able to showcase not only yourself, but ass well you will be able to showcase your performances and the fan base that you have.

Get to the Third Step: Showcase Some of Your Work

If you have gone through all the trouble to build your bio and document your work, then you need a few more things to make your DJ EPK complete, that should not be that hard to manage after you have made the effort to get the video and photos. You should as well get video and audio of your productions, as well as a written record, such as flyers and PR campaigns that you have done.

Forth Get a Record of Your Past Performances

As with many of the other steps that have to do with getting your DJ EPK together, you want to have a backlog to be able to present to potential business endeavors and having a record of your past performances is a great way to be able to do this. This should showcase your style and how it has evolved.

Fifth and Final: The Statistics on Your Music

The fifth and final thing that your arsenal should include is the statistics of your music. This can include many different things such as downloads on the Internet, as well as recordings sold at performances, and any other information on sells of your music and how it relates to you will help you to sell your brand.

The extensive popularity of Facebook as the main social media on the Internet has opened new opportunities for DJs to promote their services, music productions, mixes, and events. Furthermore, you can bring about your fans and create quite a following.  Here are the top five tips when creating a DJ page on Facebook.

Tip # 1: Create a profile page. Make sure that you fill in all the information requested, post plenty of pictures, and interact with your followers.

Tip # 2: Create a Fan Page. You can have an unlimited number of fans, send them updates, promote your events by location, get indexed by search engines, and other advantages that are not available on the regular DJ Facebook profile page.

Tip # 3: Create a DJ Facebook group page and ask people to become members. You can send them mass email directly to their Inbox and have various groups for different purposes.

Tip # 4: Link your Twitter account to your DJ Facebook pages so your postings will automatically appear on your Twitter account.

Tip # 5: Post mixes via other sites to your DJ Facebook pages. You can link to your mixes and track them.

Moreover, make sure that you answer any e-mails that come directly to your Inbox from your followers and keep your content fresh and interesting.

To make it easier for people to find your DJ Facebook pages, create a username. The username allows you to convert a long, senseless URL to a short one with your username (i.e., http://www.facebook.com/super-dj)

Add a link to your DJ Facebook pages in your e-mail signature, business cards, website, other social networks, forums, and any means of advertisement that you use. And, promote your events via the Fan page instead of the personal one to keep your followers “linked” to your Fan page.

It is easier to target specific people when you categorize your followers by location or other criteria that might work for you.

List your upcoming events on the “Write Something About You” box on the left side panel.

Make it a habit to regularly clean up your DJ Facebook pages of any junk or spam that your followers or others may post on them. Additionally, keep your posts upbeat and list your websites on the “info box”.

Create games and contests on your DJ Facebook Group and Fan pages to keep interest.

The Top 5 Tips for Creating a DJ Bio

If you're going to get booked as a DJ, you're going to have to have a great bio. Below I'll cover the basics of every bio, how you can polish it to really look like a pro and the importance of setting yourself apart from the pack. When you're done here, you'll have a distinct insider's advantage to creating a bio that gets you hired more.

Tip 1: stick to the basics. It may be a good idea to include the basics in your DJ bio. This includes where you're from, how you got started and who's influenced you so far. You'll also include personal specifics about your music such as style and genre. If you have any notable accomplishments, include them along with your current projects and the direction you are now going in. That covers the basics, now let's talk about presenting a professional look.

Tip 2: look like a pro. DJs are hired for their music not their grammar but I doesn't hurt to polish your bio to present a solid, professional look. Have somebody else proof read it after you're done and take their recommendations to heart. Your bio must be free of spelling and grammar mistakes and well written. Things like this matter more than you think they or would.

Tip 3: respect other people's time. The length is sometimes a hot topic of debate. But stick to the tried and true one-pager. Humans are very busy people. Don't assume that they'll read it just because the have a copy. Keeping it to one page shows them that you respect their time further reinforcing the fact that you're a pro.

Tip 4: know what to leave out. Now let's move on to a few things that have become such cliches that you must avoid them at all cost. Don't start the chronology of your career at childhood. Resist that temptation at all cost. And speaking of chronology, don't talk about your climb to fame. Just talk about what you're doing now. And above all, avoid hype. It doesn't help. It doesn't look professional and it may keep you from getting hired.

Tip 5 is the most important: Differentiate or die of obscurity. If you do the same thing everyone else does, your DJ bio will be lost in a pile with everyone else's. Be different. Look different. Make your bio interesting by choosing a different path.
